The Early Years
Kim was born in Chester County, PA. At age 8, Kim's mother joined the Air Force, and so Kim grew up all over the world.
Kim says: "I gained my weight during the pregnancy of my first daughter 22 years ago and have tried without success many, many times to lose weight. I became so used to the extra weight and shopping in the 'larger size stores' that I thought that was how I would be."
Kim's Transformation
Since May of 2008 Kim has lost 45 pounds! She refers to her current status as "a work in progress". She wants to lose another 45 pounds to reach her goal weight.
Kim says "I can't remember EVER feeling this good. It is an amazing thing to be able and want to play with my 5 year old on the playground equipment and run with her instead of 'catching up'. It feels so good to get moving and see the successes in your health. Just by eating right and losing weight - I have reduced my cholesterol by about 75 points and my fasting blood sugars that were elevated are now at a 'normal' level."
How She Did It
Kim attributes her dramatic success after years of trying to a change in attitude. Kim says "You have to get your attitude right and you have to be ready. Until you are ready to make a change to improve YOU - I don't believe you will achieve results. When I began to see the weight come off - and pants were loose - it was easier to keep going."
Kim says "I followed a plan of eating 6 small meals a day. I realized it was too easy to starve my body - and that is what I was doing. I also walked about 3 times a week until December - when I added in weight lifting and aerobics approximately 6 days a week. I LOVE the time at the gym - I always thought people were crazy when they said that."
Kim has been a vegetarian for many years, inspired by her uncle when she was in junior high. Kim's story demonstrates that even vegetarians can be overweight if their diet consists mostly of processed foods made from starchy carbohydrates instead of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
My favorite quote from our interview is when I asked Kim about what advice she could offer to those of us who continue to struggle with our weight. She said: "START. Get your mind right. Get your mind into a positive state - not failure - not "what if I can't" state."
Kim's Quick Tips:
• Eat 6 small meals per day
• Everything you put in your mouth should be eaten with a protein. NO carbs without protein.
• Balance. Eat a variety of foods to make a healthy eating plan.
• My favorite snack - and always in the car in case I don't get to pack food = almonds and/or Soy crisps.
• Move it, Move it! - It feels good. I know people used to tell me that and I'd roll my eyes.... but it's true.
